Tutorial 8

Look up 2 feature stories. Analyze how it’s written and explain the type of structure, interviews carried out, quotes and ending.
Rewrite the story with a different introduction (2-3 paras).

Feature Story 1:

Structure

This news story uses the structure of The Kabob or “Writing in Circle”. The news story started by introducing the main character and its anecdote. Then it slowly transforms into discussing the broad topic of how his famous song piece manages to influence many people. At last the story then returns back into the main character Chalamanda of how he wants to benefit from his original piece of music due to life survival needs.

Interviews

The interview was mainly surrounding Giddes Chalamanda, who is the main character of this news story. But the news story also included other support characters such as his grandson Austin to comment on his grandfather’s achievement, musician Davis Njobvu, South Africa music producer Joe Machingura to comment on the song and Chalamanda’s manager Pemphero Mphande to have a say on his next actions. All of these interviews help provide different angles to the news story.

Quotes

All the vital quotes spoken from the people mentioned above are included, as it provides more credibility and it helps the readers to immerse themselves in the news story better. It kind of makes the readers feel like the interviewee is directly talking to them.

Ending

The ending is good in a way that it concludes the news story with a nice quote that comments on this meaningful song made by Chalamanda in the context of today’s world. So readers who are reading it now can very much relate to what the quote wishes to convey and can have some thoughts about the deeper meaning of it.

Rewritten Introduction

The introduction should start by introducing Giddes Chalamanda and why people should care about him, in order to hook the readers into reading the remaining news story.

Whether you are a TikTok user or not, you have probably heard the catchy rhythm song of Linny Hoo at some point on social media or at a party.

The origin of this trendy song is actually by 92 years old Giddes Chalamanda.

Feature Story 2:

Structure

This news story uses the structure of hourglass. The story starts with an anecdotal lead by introducing the decades old tailor shop business and its owner. The story then progresses into wider details of his business in the old times. In the closing, the story progressively narrows back to the anecdotal introduced in the lead, which is the tailor business in the current context, whether the business will continue to survive in the future.

Interviews

The whole news story interviewee was dominated by the main character, Mr. Lee Wan Sang. It is good in a way that the readers are able to understand Mr. Lee more in depth regarding his personal experiences or opinions based on this news issue. But on the other hand, this news piece lacks angles, as there are no other parties relating to this news story such as loyal customers of Mr. Lee or modern tailor shop to provide their viewpoints.

Quotes

Quotes are all by Mr. Lee, this makes the readers feel like Mr. Lee himself is telling the story while reading the news story. This makes the news story more interesting, as it adds a sense of human touch to the story that has human interest news value.

Ending

The ending acts as a conclusion by having Mr. Lee saying his hope for his decade old tailor shop.

Rewritten Introduction

Rather than writing the introduction in a very hard news way, maybe this feature story can start with a more narrative style of anecdote to give it a more interesting fresh start.

Every morning, inside the modest exterior of Plaza Majlis Perbandaran Klang (MPK), a more than four-decade old tailor shop comes to life, serving customers with their clothing needs.

The old tailor business My Tailor has been run by owner 71-year-old Lee Wan Sang since 1990.
