A Loving Chinese New Year

Due to pandemic, this is the second year ICNY charity event had turned online

On 15 and 16 January, students in need and their families had gathered on Zoom and were blessed with an online charity event that helped them to go through a great Chinese New Year.

The pre–Chinese New Year event ICNY was previously held as a physical event before the pandemic aiming to reduce the financial burden of families in need since school reopening is around the corner while helping them to spend a happy Chinese New Year celebration.

Through the recommendation of 90 primary schools and 10 secondary schools, 200 students applied for this event. After going through the process of online home visit and filtering, 148 students benefited in the end.

The benefited students each obtained “ang pow” money varying from value RM270 to RM300 depending on financial situation.

This year had been the sixth year the event had been held and a number of 49 young passionate volunteers were recruited in total to help plan, organise and execute the event.

Due to the restriction of pandemics, they were unable to go with fun interactive activities through online events such as physical workshops or traditional games. So, they had to be creative and came up with a colouring contest, family photo contest and online station games as the event’s activities.

Other than the fun activities, there was also a short comedy video fully prepared by the organising committee themselves sharing about traditional customs of Chinese New Year.

Po Zi Yang, the organising committee chairman said that it was quite a challenge and stress for him as this is the first time being the leader of such a huge event with so many parties involved.

“But in the end, I was glad and proud that the team held it up well and finished the two days event,”

"The families who attended are happy and sponsors were satisfied, so I would say it is a good ending to welcome the upcoming Chinese New Year for all of us.” said Zi Yang
