Tutorial 10

Look up a sports event that you find interesting and record the way of its coverage (i.e. stories/videos/audios/photo galleries). Evaluate whether the event has been comprehensively covered. If you are asked to repackage the content, how will you produce it to better target the online consumers?

Sport News Story:

Story:

This story is about the hardships of Russian ice figure skaters in the current Winter Olympic game. Kamila Valieva broke down after facing a possible ban and strip of her Russian teammates’ medal due to her failed drug test. Despite such a disaster, she still faced pressure from the hard criticism of her coach, questioning her actions. Alexandra Trusova was also facing a breakdown after making her history five quadruple jumps yet not able to beat teammate Anna Shcherbakova to the gold medal. This made her disappointed till the point she shouted to quit ice skating and never to step onto the ice again.

Multimedia elements (videos, audios, photo galleries):

There were sufficient photos available as photo galleries in the news story. It was good that they put the photo of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva breaking down while being comforted by her coach and Olympic committee as the first photo, this matches well with the interesting headline that contains news value - conflict.

Repackage the content

Story:

The news story was good in that many angles were covered and key personnel were interviewed as sources of the news story. But it would be best if the news story could include direct quotations of Russian ice skater Kamila Valieva who broke down due to the drug test and critics from the coach to give her opinions and sayings. Another great person to interview would be the Russian figure skating coach Eteri Tutberidze, as this could give her a good chance to explain herself or even apologies for her actions if needed through the media.

Multimedia elements (videos, audios, photo galleries):

The series of photos could be made better by arranging them in order, either through category or chronological order. The current photos are jumping here and there, one minute you are seeing photos featuring Russian trio teenage figure skating stars, next minute you are seeing photos of the athletes skating and breaking down, then it's back to photos featuring the Russian trio athletes again. It's kind of messy and this affects the reading experience for readers.

What could be added are videos or audios about Valieva breaking down. This would help readers feel more the situation of how devastated Valieva was at that moment, it would trigger the feelings of readers. Next, video interviews of Russia’s figure skating coach or Olympic committee responding to the issue could be added as well to make the news story better.
