Tutorial 6

Identify two news events that the publication had used live blogging to cover. Record the story’s development, including the length of the post, the timeline (i.e. how frequent the post is published), and examine the multimedia elements used in the story. Include also your comments on the issue of balance, attribution and verification.

If you are asked to curate the content for each news event, what do you suggest? Think of your social media platforms and how do you see they are helpful in curating the relevant content?

1. GOLDEN TOUCH Golden Globes Awards 2022 LIVE updates by The Sun

Due to the covid 19 pandemic, this year’s Golden Globes Award 2022 will be a private event, with no audiences, nominees or media are invited to the award ceremony. Due to the awards shows’ ordinary broadcast partner, NBC, has split from the HPFA, so the award will not be broadcast live anywhere online or even on television. This is where live blogging news comes in, by providing audiences with live updates on the award ceremony status based on official news by the organizer. The news is updated every 30 minutes with short updates on the awards nominations and winners together with long listings of winners of each category. Proper attribution is given from time to time for some news source they obtained from other news agencies. Although the award results were quite obvious, they got it from the only source which is the officials of Golden Globe Awards, it would be better if they could mention it in the news piece to add more credibility.

If I were asked to curate the content for each news event, I would put in more multimedia content to make the live blogging news more interesting, since the news is an entertainment genre as well. Although it is a private event with no press allowed, if I can get some shots of the award announcement situation by using some connections, my live blogging news would have the advantage compared to other competitors. I would also try to include more multimedia content ( example: social media postings of nominees from their Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and etc) or even related photo media (example: photos of award winners in their nominated movie character) to increase visual aid.

This live blogging news is about the development of Donald Trump ordering its allies to launch precision airstrikes on Syria after suspicions that local authorities were using chemical weapons on its citizens. Majority of the news is updated on a 3 to 10 minutes basis with updates on the status of the airstrike process. One serious thing that I find is that, the whole news doesn’t include any date to inform readers when this issue happened. The only date available as a clue is in a photo of Donald Trump’s tweet regarding this issue, without that photo attached, readers will not have a clue when this issue happened. Inside the news updates, there is no attribution or verification from other trustable sources to help increase credibility of this live blogging news. Overall, the whole live blogging news seems legit and sketchy at the same time, if India Today is not a well-known credible news agency, this news would have been put at a disadvantage.

If I were asked to curate the content for each news event, I would put in more multimedia content to attract the readers more to continue reading. By including photos such as the launch of airstrikes or even the aftermath and videos of the president announcing the launch of the airstrike at the press conference would increase the quality of the whole live blogging news by so much. If I search related hashtags on social media such as Twitter, I might stumble upon more information from all different parties, so this can make my news more complete in a sense that many angles and considered and covered.
