Issue: Yemen’s Sanaa Airport Struck by Saudi-led Coalition

Reuters:

The Star:

Compare between two publications on how they presented the stories. Evaluate the appropriateness of multimedia elements being used.

In the news story published by Reuters, the multimedia elements used are both photo and video. The news story was first greeted by a 47 seconds video made up of several short real time video footage showing the after-incident situation. The video is a good idea as it helps the reader to better imagine the scenario described in the news story, just like they are located on site at the scene of the incident.

As you scroll lower, you will see a slideshow of 4 photos showing key moments of the incident. The usage of photo slideshows is a good move as the first photo shows Sanaa airport before the coalition strike while the rest shows moments after the coalition strike. By doing so, readers are able to have a better understanding and comparison of the effect of the coalition strike.

While for the same issue’s news story published by The Star, only the photo is used as the multimedia element in the news story. The only photo shows the Sanaa airport before the coalition strike. So, if we compare this to Reuter’s publication which uses more photos and even a video to better provide visual aid to its readers, The Star’s publication of this news issue is at a disadvantage.

Saudi-led coalition strikes Yemen's Sanaa airport

The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen carried out air strikes on what it called military targets at Yemen's Sanaa international airport on Monday.

Iran-aligned Houthi movement forces had previously sent drones from the airport to fire missiles into Saudi Arabia which caused this air strikes retaliation by Saudi-led coalition

Tuesday's strikes hit six targets, including places used for launching drone attacks, training drone personnel, housing trainers and trainees, and storing drones, the coalition said.

According to a statement by Saudi state media, it said it had asked civilians to evacuate the airport before launching the strike.

Coalition spokesman Brigadier General Turki al-Malki said the strikes would not affect operational capacity, airspace management, air traffic, or ground handling operations.

"The operation comes in response to threats and the use of the airport's facilities to launch cross-border attacks," he said.

He also said the coalition had removed protections from specific sites in the airport which it said were being used for military purposes, and the operation was in accordance with international humanitarian law.
